News Barrington Stage Opens 2007 Season with West Side Story Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield, MA, presents the landmark 1957 musical West Side Story, which begins performances June 13 and plays through July 14.

Barrington's artistic director Julianne Boyd helms the production featuring Jerome Robbins' original choreography re-created by Joshua Bergasse.

Boasting a cast of 25 and an 11-piece orchestra, the fully realized production of West Side Story celebrates the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking musical.

The cast of 25 includes Julie Craig (Luisa in The Fantasticks) as Maria, Chris Peluso (Lestat and Assassins) as Tony, Jacqueline Colmer as Anita, Freddy Ramirez as Bernardo, Justin Bohon (Oklahoma! and Les Miserables) as Riff, Beth Crandall as Anybodys, Gordon Stanley (Ragtime and Beauty and the Beast and BSC's Follies, Mame) as Doc, Dale Radunz as Lt. Schrank, and Xavier Cano, Nicky Cooper, Robert Dalton, Billy Fagen, Matt Gibson, Melinda Hall, Spencer Howard, Joey Calveri, Jamie Markovich, Michael McGurk, Michael Mindlin, Kristin Piro, John Raterman, Rebecca Riker, Manuel Santos, Kiira Schmidt and Vanessa Van Vrancken.

The creative team comprises Luke Cantarella (set design), Anne Kennedy (costume design), Scott Pinkey (lighting design), Randy Hansen (sound design). Darren R. Cohen conducts and musical directs.

The production will take place in Barrington's newly renovated 520-seat theatre in downtown Pittsfield. The renovation makes it possible for BSC to reach a wider audience, with the addition of 220 mezzanine seats. West Side Story debuted on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre in Sept. 1957. It played 732 performances before closing June 27, 1959. Conceived, directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins, the original cast included Larry Kert as Tony, Carol Lawrence as Maria and Chita Rivera as Anita. The classic Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim score boasts such tunes as "Tonight," "America," "Maria," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere."

Barrington Stage Company, a professional Equity theatre, was co-founded in 1995 by artistic director Julianne Boyd. BSC's mission is three-fold: "to present top-notch, compelling work; to develop new plays and musicals; and to find fresh, bold ways to bring new audiences into the theatre." BSC earned national attention with William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin's Tony Award-winning musical hit The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which began as a workshop at BSC in February 2004, was produced in its world premiere to critical acclaim that summer season, prior to its move to Off-Broadway and Broadway.
