Charlie Robinson (of TV's "Night Court") plays Troy Maxson, the brutish, flawed patriarch who once played baseball in the Negro League and now spars with his wife, Rose (played by Juanita Jennings of "Meet the Browns"), and his athlete son, Cory (played by Larry Bates). Seret Scott directs a cast that also includes Gregg Daniel (Bono), Brandon J. Dirden (Lyons), Baron Kelly (Gabe) and, in alternating performances, Skye Whitebear and Sofya Ogunseitan (Raynell).

Performances play South Coast Repertory's Segerstrom Stage.

Fences is one of the most popular and acclaimed titles of the late Wilson's ten-play Century Cycle, each of which depicts African-American life in a different decade of the 1900s. It won the Pulitzer Prize, the Tony and the Drama Desk Award in 1987.

SCR's Fences creative team includes Shaun Motley (set design), Dana Rebecca Woods (costume design), Peter Maradudin (lighting design), Jim Ragland (sound design), Chrissy Church (assistant stage manager) and Jamie Tucker (stage manager).

Robinson was last seen at SCR in the world premiere of My Wandering Boy, and prior to that in Wilson's The Piano Lesson. Robinson won the 2006 Ovation Award for Best Actor in a Play for his earlier work as Troy in Fences, a role he played for six months at Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He is widely known for his television credits, especially as Mac in "Night Court."
