Opening night for Peter Grimm is set for March 20. According to press notes, the play "tells the tale of a big-hearted, short-sighted man whose plans for his loved ones don't take account of their wishes or his likely demise. But when his heart fails, the family and business he has built are set to fall apart, and he must return from beyond to set things right. With no one else able to see or hear him, it is up to an eight-year-old boy to bring his message home."
For Peter Grimm's original 1911 production, Belasco developed a special staging technology to effectively portray the afterlife onstage, according to press notes. Belasco was a pioneer in the development of naturalistic stagecraft and acting styles, in addition to being a producer, director, theatre manager and playwright. Other playwriting credits include The Girl of the Golden West, The Heart of Maryland and Dubarry.
Peter Grimm will offer a special pay-what-you-will performance March 15 at 7:30 PM. The Metropolitan Playhouse is located at 220 E. 4th Street. For tickets, call (212) 995-3502 or visit metropolitanplayhouse.org.
