Ben Whishaw, who made his Broadway debut last season as John Proctor in the revival of Arthur Miller's The Crucible, is currently in negotiations to join the cast of Mary Poppins Returns, the Disney sequel to the 1964 classic Mary Poppins.

Rob Marshall is directing the film, which will feature the previously reported Emily Blunt and Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda. Meryl Streep is also in talks for the motion picture, which is set 25 years after the original.

Whishaw, according to the Hollywood Reporter, will play a grown-up Michael Banks. Banks, the industry website says, “experiences a personal loss and sees the return of his big sister Jane. That results in the arrival of the magical Mary Poppins (Blunt), who teams up with her lamplighter friend Jack (Miranda) to help the family.”

Filming is expected to begin in London in early 2017. Mary Poppins Returns will hit cinemas December 25, 2018.

Producers are Marshall, John DeLuca and Marc Platt.
