Industry News Benny & Joon Musical Among Works Selected for Rhinebeck Writers Retreat Nine musicals have been selected to participate in the week-long residencies that begin July 1.

The Rhinebeck Writers Retreat has announced the nine musicals and their creative teams selected to participate in the week-long residencies in the Hudson Valley this summer.

Among the selected works: the new musical Benny & Joon, which had its world premiere last summer at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego and is slated for its East Coast premiere at the Paper Mill Playhouse next spring.

The 2018 selections include Montgomery, by Britt Bonney; Extended Stay, by Scotty Arnold and Jenny Stafford; Blessing, by Andrew R. Butler and Andrew Farmer; The Tattooed Lady, by Max Vernon and Erin Courtney; Monster Hit, by Chris Littler and Ellen Winter; Postcard American Town, by Lynne Shankel and Crystal Skillman; Benny & Joon, by Mindi Dickstein, Nolan Gasser, and Kirsten Guenther; Pedro Pan, by Rebecca Aparicio and Stephen Anthony Elkins; and The Peculiar History of Dr. James Barry, by Ken Davenport, Doug Katsaros, and Amanda Yesnowitz.

Established in 2011 by former National Alliance for Musical Theatre Executive Director Kathy Evans, the Rhinebeck Writers Retreat does not claim any stake in future royalties from participating musicals.

Selected writers pay nothing and receive a $500 stipend during their individual week-long stay. All expenses are covered, including travel costs up to $750 per writer. Writers with children or other care-giving responsibilities are eligible and, if they are selected, Rhinebeck Writers Retreat will work with them to accommodate their housing needs.
