Classic Arts News Bergen International Festival to Stage Norway's Second Ring Cycle The Bergen International Festival will begin a production of Wagner's Ring cycle next spring with performances of Das Rheingold on May 31 and June 1.
An opera from the cycle will be staged at the festival each year through 2009. The event marks the second time Wagner's tetralogy has been staged in Norway, according to Gramophone magazine.

"The framework and level of ambition for Bergen International Festival has been set," Per Boye Hansen, the festival's new managing director, said in a statement.

The cycle is being produced with the Latvia National Opera and conducted by Andris Nelsons, a young Latvian conductor who has studied with Mariss Jansons. Das Rheingold is directed by Stefan Herheim. The new production will have its premiere in Riga in April 2006.
