Spiro Malas and Marni Nixon will star in Barrington Stage Company's third season opener, Kander and Ebb's Weimar-style musical Cabaret, running at the Consolati Performing Arts Center in Sheffield, MA, June 25 through July 13.
The dark musical, following the love stories of two couples in pre-Third Reich Berlin, explores the surreal, underground world of the late night entertainment at Berlin's Kit Kat Club.
Spiro Malas plays Jewish grocer Herr Schultz, who falls in love with landlady Fraulein Schneider, played by Marni Nixon Malas received a Theatre World Award for his performance on Broadway in The Most Happy Fella. In addition to his extensive Broadway credits, Malas has performed with the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, and has made several recordings, including The Elixir of Love with Luciano Pavoratti.
Nixon is best known for her recordings as the singing voices of film stars Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, and Natalie Wood in West Side Story. In addition to her own Broadway credits in My Fair Lady, Opal, and Taking My Turn, she has also appeared on television and in films, including The Sound of Music and the upcoming Disney release The Legend of Mulan.
The role of Sally Bowles will be played by regional actress Becca Ayers, and American Repertory Theatre Institute at Harvard graduate Jonathan Hammond will play the Emcee. Cabaret is directed by BSC Artistic Director Julianne Boyd. Boyd teamed up with Joan Micklin Silver to write their critically acclaimed musical revues A. . .My Name is Alice and A. . .My Name is Still Alice. Boyd conceived and directed the Broadway show Eubie!, which garnered three Tony Award nominations.
Choreographer Hope Clarke teamed up with Boyd last season at BSC, for Alice Revisited, a combination of the . . .Alice reviews. Clarke choreographed Jelly's Last Jam on Broadway, for which she received a Tony nomination, as well as Off-Broadway's The Colored Museum and The Tempest with Patrick Stewart.
