News Berliner Ensemble's Threepenny Opera Makes U.S. Premiere at BAM Oct. 4 The Berliner Ensemble, under the direction of Robert Wilson, brings Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's The Threepenny Opera to the Brooklyn Academy of Music beginning Oct. 4.

Performed in German with English subtitles, Threepenny Opera will run through Oct. 8 at the Howard Gilman Opera House. It is presented as part of the 2011 Next Wave Festival.

Founded by Brecht and Helene Weigel in 1949, the Berliner Ensemble is making its New York debut with Threepenny. Elizabeth Hauptmann authored the German translation, which is based on John Gay's The Beggar's Opera.

Threepenny Opera has direction, stage and lighting concept by award-winning director Wilson, with musical direction by Hans-Jörn Brandenburg and Stefan Rager. The production has costumes by Jacques Reynaud, co-direction by Ann-Christin Rommen, co-scenic design by Serge von Arx, co-costume design by Yashi Tabassomi, dramaturgy by Jutta Ferbers and Anika Bárdos, and lighting by Andreas Fuchs and Ulrich Eh.

According to BAM, "Wilson reimagines this well-known tale of greed and gangsters, prostitutes and the Peachum family with his signature precision and boundless visual inventiveness—elements include a striking geometric design incorporating neon lighting and exaggeratedly padded body suits. A live orchestra and critically acclaimed performances contribute to the creation of a singularly memorable production."
