News Beverley Klein to Star in U.K. Professional Premiere of Michael John LaChiusa's Bernarda Alba Beverley Klein will play the title role in the U.K. professional premiere of Michael John LaChiusa's 2006 musical Bernarda Alba, based on Lorca's 1936 play The House of Bernarda Alba.

It will begin performances at London's fringe Union Theatre Aug. 23, prior to an official opening Aug. 25, for a run through Sept. 17.

In press materials, the show is described as a "taut, provocative musical about an emotionally and sexually repressed group of daughters rebelling against their smothering mother in 1930s rural Spain, with the women's struggle against a repressive regime culminating in a shocking climax."

Klein's extensive credits stretch from the West End, National and Donmar Warehouse to the Royal Opera House, English National Opera and Opera North. In the West End, she has played Golde in Fiddler on the Roof at the Savoy, played the Nurse in Romeo and Juliet at the National and Mrs. Peachum in The Threepenny Opera at the Donmar Warehouse. She has played Mrs. Lovett for Opera North's production of Sweeney Todd and the Witch for the Royal Opera House's Linbury Studio production of Into the Woods. She has also played the Old Lady in English National Opera's production of Candide at the London Coliseum.

The production is directed by Katherine Hare, with musical direction by Leigh Thompson and choreography by Racky Plews. It is produced by Triptic Theatre.
