The new, 499-seat theatre being built on W. 42nd Street by the Shubert Organization will be christened the Little Shubert. The theatre is rising where a string of small houses called Theater Row once sat. The demolished theatres are being replaced by new spaces, as well as the larger theatre, which is the first Off-Broadway house specifically built by the Shuberts.

It will open on Nov. 1. Shubert head Gerald Schoenfeld has told Playbill On Line that the premiere production will be "a new play by a leading American playwright."

A Shubert Theatre has long sat on Broadway, at the corner of 44th Street and Shubert Alley.
