News Bobbie Back on Board for Sweet Charity; Tomei Sought Walter Bobbie is back on board as director of Sweet Charity, producer Fran Weissler told Playbill On-Line.

PBOL reported Oct. 8 that the one-time director of the Broadway-bound musical was in discussions to return to the project. Fran Weissler confirmed Oct. 16 that Bobbie was signed and would direct the musical. As for that other big question—the show's star—Weissler said Marisa Tomei was once again sought for the role. Tomei was attached to the venture for many months, but was replaced halfway through last summer's workshop by Nine Tony-winner Jane Krakowski. "We want her to do it," said Weissler. "We're just waiting to hear from her people. We should know in a few days. I think it will happen."

Bobbie and Tomei's reentry would mean a return to the status quo for a show that has been through many changes. Bobbie was initially named as the Fran and Barry Weissler and Clear Channel production's helmsman, but left the project in early 2003. Television actress Jenna Elfman was first selected to play the title role of a good-hearted dance hall hostess, but she dropped out in September 2002, and was supplanted by Tomei.

After Bobbie left (the reason given for Bobbie's exit was that the director and the Weisslers could not concur on the makeup of the show's creative team) English director Timothy Sheader was hired to helm the tuner. It was Sheader who led the summer workshop.
