Last seen at Bucks County in Love Letters opposite James Earl Jones, Emmy and Tony winner Daly will be joined by Tony Award nominees Manoel Felciano (Sweeney Todd, Brooklyn) and Bobby Steggert (Ragtime, Giant, Big Fish). Tony Award nominee Sheryl Kaller (Next Fall) will direct.
Performances will begin June 13 for a run through June 23.
"The Bucks County Playhouse has a history of bringing in top-class theater artists, and we are proud to be adding Terrence McNally to that roster," said producing director Bernstein in a statement. "We are also thrilled to have the talented Tyne Daly returning to our stage in the world premiere of a play from one of Broadway's leading playwrights."
Mothers and Sons, according to BCP, "is the story of the mother of a young man who died from AIDS and his partner at the time of her son's death. In the many years since they last met, both their lives have changed — more than either of them could have possibly imagined. This new play asks us to consider how far we have come as a society in need of healing and how far we still have to go."
Other members of the creative team include set designer Wilson Chin, Tony Award-winning costume designer Jess Goldstein, lighting designer Travis McHale and sound designer John Gromada. Located 90 minutes from New York City, the Bucks County Playhouse opened in 1939 on the site of a grist mill dating from the late 18th century. The structure was at that time in danger of demolition, but playwright Moss Hart and the local community rallied to save the building and re-opened it as a theatrical venue, which quickly became one of the country's most famous regional theatres. It remained in continuous operation (under a number of operators) until December 2010. Bridge Street Foundation, the non-profit family foundation of Kevin and Sherri Daugherty with Tanya Cooper as president, reopened the venue on July 2, 2012, exactly 73 years from when it originally opened in 1939. The Rodgers & Hammerstein revue A Grand Night for Singing launched the 2012 season.
