The BSO's performances at its summer home in the Berkshires will run from July 8 through August 28. Levine will lead the orchestra in, among other works, an opening-night rendition of Mahler's Eighth Symphony and performances of new works by John Harbison and Charles Wuorinen (which are receiving their world premieres as part of the BSO's current season).

In addition, Levine will lead the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, an ensemble of the young musicians in training at the center, in the annual Leonard Bernstein Memorial Concert. The concert on July 16 will feature excerpts from Wagner's Die Walk‹re and G‹tterd‹mmerung and will star soprano Deborah Voigt and other Wagner specialists.

Other conductors leading the BSO during the summer season include Marin Alsop, James Colon, Charles Dutoit, Hans Grad, and Kurt Masur; among the guest soloists will be Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, James Galway, Lynn Harrell, and Yo-Yo Ma.

The Tanglewood season begins on June 24 with a production of Johann Mattheson's 1710 Boris Goudenow, presented by the Boston Early Music Festival. The opera was never performed during the composer's lifetime, and received its world premiere this month in Hamburg. Also in June, the Mark Morris Dance Group will appear with the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra for the third time.

Visiting ensembles include the Orchestra of St. Luke's, the Beaux Arts Trio, the Emerson String Quartet, the Zukerman Chamber Players (drawn from Pinchas Zukerman's National Arts Centre Orchestra), and the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

The Festival of Contemporary Music, Tanglewood's annual new-music series, will be curated this year by Harbison. Details have not yet been released.

The BSO also announced that for the first time, all Friday- and Saturday-night BSO concerts at the outdoor Koussevitzky Music Shed will be displayed on large video screens. In the past, the screens have been used only for a few events.
