The Boston Symphony's 2006 summer season at Tanglewood will open on July 7 with a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony led by music director James Levine, the BSO announced.

Levine will also conduct the BSO in Schoenberg's massive oratorio Gurrelieder, and will lead a weekend of Mozart, marking the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth with a concert performance of Don Giovanni, the Requiem, the "Jupiter" Symphony, Piano Concerto No. 27, and other works. Soloists in the Mozart works include pianist Richard Goode, mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, who sings the title role in Don Giovanni.

In addition to his programs with the BSO, Levine will conduct the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra in a concert performance of Strauss's Elektra with sopranos Lisa Gasteen and Christine Brewer, and in a program of three fully staged 20th-century operas: Elliott Carter's What Next? (in its American stage debut), Hindemith's Hin und zur‹ck, and Stravinsky's Mavra.

Also among the conductors on the schedule are former BSO music director Seiji Ozawa, who will lead Mahler's Symphony No. 2 ("Resurrection"); former principal guest conductor Benard Haitink, appearing at Tanglewood for the first time since 2001; and guest conductors Andrew Davis, Hans Graf, Kurt Masur, Donald Runnicles, Harry Bicket, Rafael Fr‹hbeck de Burgos, and Herbert Blomstedt. Soloists include pianist Andr_ Watts, violinist Gil Shaham, violonist Midori, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Christian Zacharias, mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, pianist Peter Serkin, and pianist Yefim Bronfman.

Special events include a visit from the Philadelphia Orchestra, appearing at Tanglewood for the first time since 1999; the annual Tanglewood on Parade Gala, with Levine, Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart, and former Pops conductor John Williams on the podium; an Independence Day concert; and a three-day jazz festival.
