Levine will conduct 11 programs, including Mahler's Symphony No. 3 on July 14 with mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe. Other Levine-led performances include Ravel's Piano Concerto in G with soloist Pierre-Laurent Aimard; Brahmss' Symphony No. 1, and a concert performance of Bart‹k's only opera, Duke Bluebeard's Castle, with mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung as Judith and bass-baritone Albert Dohmen as Bluebeard.
For his final 2007 appearance at Tanglewood, on August 18, Levine will conduct the BSO in Berlioz's La Damnation de Faust, with mezzo-soprano Yvonne Naef, tenor Marcello Giordani, baritone Jos_ van Dam and bass-baritone Patrick Carfizzi.
Levine will also lead the Tanglewood Music Center (TMC) Orchestra and Vocal Fellows in a concert performance of Mozart's CosÐ fan tutte on August 11-14, as well as a concert performance of Verdi's Don Carlo on July 28 with the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra and soprano Patricia Racette, mezzo-soprano Luciana D'Intino, tenor Johan Botha, and basses James Morris and Paata Burchuladze.
Additional highlights of the 2007 Tanglewood season include cellist Yo-Yo Ma joining the BSO and guest conductor Edo de Waart for an all-Dvoršk program on August 4, and violinist Itzhak Perlman performing Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 on August 12.
The Boston Symphony will present an all-Beethoven weekend July 20-22, with guest conductors Mark Elder, Hans Graf and Jens Georg Bachmann. Frequent Tanglewood visitor Rafael Fr‹hbeck de Burgos will lead the TMC Orchestra, Tanglewood Festival Chorus and soloists in Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 on August 19.
Musicians making their Tanglewood debuts in 2007 include violinist Janine Jansen, cellist Daniel M‹ller-Schott, tenors Eric Cutler, baritone David Won, bass-baritone Dietrich Henschel, and bass Jordan Bisch, in addition to Racette, D'Intino, Giordani, and van Dam.
Other visiting musicians include conductors Kurt Masur and Andr_ Previn, pianists Emanuel Ax and Leon Fleischer, violinist Joshua Bell and soprano Christine Brewer.
On the pops side, Keith Lockhart leads the Boston Pops, soloists, and Tanglewood Music Center Vocal Fellows in a concert performance of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel on July 10.
John Williams conducts the Pops on August 25 in music from his own Harry Potter film scores. Lockhart closes the Tanglewood season with an all-Gershwin program featuring guest vocalists Marin Mazzie and Brian Stokes Mitchell on August 26.
Tanglewood's Festival of Contemporary Music, with director John Harbison, runs July 29 to August 3. This year, the "Generation of '38" is celebrated with works by composers born in that year, including William Bolcom, Joan Tower, Charles Wuorinen, and Harbison himself.
