The Jupiter Quartet also won the C$3,000 Székely Prize for its performance of Beethoven's Quartet in C-sharp minor, Op. 131.
Second prize and C$12,000 went to the Houston, Texas-based Enso Quartet. The Royal String Quartet of Warsaw, Poland, was awarded third prize; fourth prize went to the Fry Street Quartet, based in Logan, Utah.
The competition, held annually at the Banff Centre, was created in 1983 to mark the 50th anniversary of the performing arts center, and is open to string quartets worldwide whose members are younger than 35.
