News Bourne to Stage New Dance Version of Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray Matthew Bourne's New Adventures will present Dorian Gray — freely adapted from Oscar Wilde's gothic masterpiece — which will preview at Plymouth's Theatre Royal Aug. 14-16 before opening at this year's Edinburgh International Festival on Aug. 22, where it will play at the King's Theatre through Aug. 30.

The production will then come to London's Sadler's Wells for a Sept. 2-14 run before touring to Norwich's Theatre Royal (Sept. 16-20) and Newcastle's Theatre Royal (Sept. 23-27).

Bourne will devise, direct and choreograph the new show, which will feature music by Terry Davies and designs by usual collaborator Lez Brotherston. Davies, Brotherston and lighting designer Paul Constable all previously worked with Bourne on his Olivier Award-winning production of Play without Words. The new work has been commissioned by the Edinburgh International Festival in association with Sadler's Wells. It is Bourne's first new work for the company in nearly three years.

According to press materials, Dorian Gray is set in the image-obsessed worlds of contemporary art and politics. The dark fairy tale tells the story of an exceptionally alluring young man who makes a pact with the devil. Amongst London's beautiful people, Dorian Gray is the 'It Boy' – an icon of beauty and truth in an increasingly ugly world.

The cast of Dorian Gray will include Richard Winsor (Edward in Edward Scissorhands, Angelo in The Car Man) as Dorian Gray, Michela Meazza (Lana in The Car Man, Joyce in Edward Scissorhands) as Lady H and Aaron Sillis (The Car Man) as Basil Hallward. Other cast members include Scott Ambler, Ashley Bain, Jared Hageman, Chris Marney and Shaun Walters.

Bourne's previous productions for New Adventures, the company he originally founded as Adventures in Motion Pictures, include the iconic Swan Lake (featuring an all-male corps-de-ballet that came to Broadway and has also played several seasons in the West End), Nutcracker!, The Car Man, Edward Scissorhands and Play Without Words (based on The Servant that was first produced at the National Theatre). Nutcracker! has already toured the UK this year, and Edward Scissorhands is set to tour Australia (including a season at the Sydney Opera House), play a four-week season at the Chatelet Theatre in Paris, tour the UK and then return to Sadler's Wells where it premiered for a seven-week Christmas season. Bourne is also a noted theatrical choreographer, currently represented by Mary Poppins on Broadway (which he co-choreographed with Stephen Mear and co-directed with Richard Eyre), and whose work on a 1994 West End revival of Oliver! will soon be re-created when it is revived at Drury Lane in December, in a production that he also co-directed with Rupert Goold.
