Smokey Joe's Cafe Tony nominee Brenda Braxton will return to the Broadway company of Chicago in January.

Braxton, who recently played Velma Kelly in the musical's national tour, will again play the merry murderess on Broadway beginning Jan. 12, 2004. Original Chicago star James Naughton returns to the Broadway cast for a limited engagement Jan. 6; film star Gretchen Mol begins her stint as Roxie Hart that day as well. The Chicago company currently features Reva Rice as Velma Kelly, Bianca Marroquin as Roxie Hart, Patrick Swayze as Billy Flynn, Debbie Gravitte as Matron "Mama" Morton, P.J. Benjamin as Amos Hart and D. Sabella as Mary Sunshine.

Brenda Braxton received a 1995 Tony Award nomination, an NAACP Theater Award and Chicago's Jefferson Award for her work in the revue Smokey Joe's Cafe. Her other Broadway credits include Jelly's Last Jam, Cats, Legs Diamond and Dreamgirls. Braxton was also seen in the Off-Broadway musical Little Ham and the City Center Encores! mounting of House of Flowers.

Chicago won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical in 1997 as well as awards for actors Bebe Neuwirth and James Naughton, director Walter Bobbie, lighting designer Ken Billington and choreographer Ann Reinking. The original production was directed and choreographed by the late Bob Fosse.
