Rep artistic director Steven Woolf helms the tense, two-man drama that will run through Oct. 2 on the Browning main stage. It is the first production of the Rep's 2011-2012 season.

Dykstra (Rounding Third, First Prize, The Jesus Factor) is joined by Matthew Carlson (The Miracle Worker, Picnic), who plays his protégé, Ken.

Red has set design by Michael Ganio, costume design by Dorothy Marshall Englis, lighting design by Phil Monat and sound design by Rusty Wandall.

According to the Rep, "Red introduces us to Rothko at a time when his career has skyrocketed, having been offered a once-in-a lifetime commission at New York’s new modernist masterpiece, the Seagram Building. Tasked with filling the building’s Four Seasons restaurant with murals, Rothko embarks on a huge undertaking with the assistance of a new apprentice, Ken. As he nears the completion of the murals, the questions of his young assistant force Rothko to examine both his motives for creation and his place in the pantheon of great artists."

Red premiered at the Donmar Warehouse in 2009. It later transferred to Broadway in 2010, garnering the Tony Award for Best Play. Alfred Molina and Eddie Redmayne originated the roles of Rothko and Ken, respectively, earning Tony Award nominations for their work. Redmayne took the Best Featured Actor Tony Award.
