News Bridewell Presents New Revue, On the Wings of a Dream

The Bridewell Theatre, off Fleet Street, is presenting On The Wings of a Dream, a compilation of songs from Broadway shows, together with readings of poetry and prose.

Alongside the core company of Harry Burton, Jon-Paul Hevey, Shona Lindsay and Elizabeth Renihan, there will be a surprise guest artist every night, who will perform a solo spot - a variation of The Play What I Wrote's use of guest celebrities.

Opening the short season, which runs from Jan. 8 to Jan. 26, has been Kim Criswell, the Broadway star who now lives in London. Appropriately, given the nature of the evening, her solo spot consisted of four songs by New York composers.

That the Bridewell should stage this sort of fund-raising tribute to the Broadway musical is entirely appropriate, given its strong connection - begun by Carol Metcalfe, its first artistic director - with Broadway musicals in general and those of Stephen Sondheim in particular.

Metcalfe co-directs On the Wings of a Dream with her successor as artistic director, Clive Paget.
