News Broadway-Bound Priscilla Queen of the Desert Has Its Cast; Toronto Launch Is Oct. 12 Complete casting for the pre-Broadway North American company of the musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert was announced on Aug. 18.

Ashley Spencer (as Diva), Mike McGowan (as Frank), Christopher Gurr (Ensemble), Ellyn Marie Marsh (Ensemble) and Jeff Metzler (Ensemble) are newly announced for the glittery new stage musical inspired by the film. Previews will begin at The Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto (for a 12-week run) Oct. 12. Official opening night is Oct. 26.

Olivier Award nominee Tony Sheldon (as Bernadette), Hair Tony Award nominee Will Swenson (as Tick/Mitzi) and La Cage aux Folles actor Nick Adams (as Adam/Felicia) were previously announced star as "the trio of friends on a heart-warming, uplifting adventure who hop aboard a battered old bus searching for love and friendship in the middle of the Australian outback and end up finding more than they could ever have dreamed."

Priscilla Queen of the Desert is written by Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott and directed by Simon Phillips.

The score features existing dance-floor favorites. The musical, already popular in Australia and London, will open on Broadway in spring 2011 at a theatre to be announced.

The North American company also includes C. David Johnson (as Bob), James Brown III (as Jimmy), Nathan Lee Graham (as Miss Understanding), J. Elaine Marcos (as Cynthia), Jessica Phillips (as Marion), Steve Schepis (as Farrah), Keala Settle (as Shirley), plus "Divas" Jacqueline Arnold and Anastacia McCleskey, with Thom Allison, Kyle Brown, Bryan West, Tad Wilson, Joshua Buscher, Susan Dunstan, David Lopez and Eric Sciotto. The show is drawn from the Academy Award-winning film "The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert," which starred starring Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce.

Spencer's Broadway credits include Grease (Sandy) and Hairspray (Amber); McGowan appeared in Broadway's Ragtime, Grease, The Apple Tree, The Producers, plus Goodspeed's current Carnival!; Gurr recently appeared in the North American tour of Monty Python's Spamalot; Marsh has appeared on Broadway, in tours and regionally (Enron, West Side Story, A Chorus Line, Urinetown); Metzler made his Broadway debut in 2007 in Mary Poppins.

Choreography is by Ross Coleman, musical supervision and arrangements are by Stephen "Spud" Murphy and set design is by Brian Thomson. Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner have re-created their Academy Award-winning costume designs, which were originally designed for the film. Lighting is designed by Nick Schlieper and sound design is by Jonathan Deans. Make-up design is recreated by Cassie Hanlon.

The musical won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Costume Design for Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner, and was also nominated for Best New Musical. Tony Sheldon was nominated for Best Actor in a Musical.
