Some of Broadway’s top musical artists appeared on NBC’s June 21 evening telecast of the Maya & Marty variety show to perform “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” an updated version of the classic Burt Bacharach/Hal David song that is helping to support the devastated LGBT community of Orlando, FL, where a gunman murdered 49 people at the Pulse nightclub and injured 53 more.
The performance was a recreation of the recording produced and filmed by Playbill June 15, with the song and accompanying video being sold on BroadwayRecords.com and available on iTunes, with all proceeds going to the LGBT Center of Central Florida. The Maya & Marty show is a music and comedy variety show hosted by Maya Rudolph and Martin Short.
As of 8 AM June 22 it was listed as the No. 2 most downloaded song on iTunes.
