News Broadway Theatres and Other Venues Chosen for First Design Times Square Contest The homes of Broadway's Movin' Out, I Am My Own Wife, The Lion King and the upcoming Democracy are among the 39 selections for the first annual Design Times Square program.

Organized by the Times Square Alliance, Design Times Square celebrates the quality of design found in the heart of Manhattan (surrounding the Broadway theatre district). A jury of architects, designers and planners selected 39 sites from the area.

Among the almost 150 sites — including office towers, public areas, storefronts, churches, restaurants and theatres — 39 were nominated "that best exemplify the creativity and energy of the neighborhood," according to a release. The honorees were placed into four categories for public voting — Public Space and Art, Interiors, Signage and Architecture.

Eight of the chosen in the area that encompasses the Broadway theatre district were, of course, theatres, including Broadway's Brooks Atkinson Theatre, Richard Rodgers Theatre, Lyceum Theatre, Shubert Theatre and New Amsterdam Theatre as well as Second Stage Theater, New Victory Theatre and the New 42nd Street Studios.

Voters have until Sept. 30 to chose their favorite designs at the website (www.timessquarenyc.org/design). As an incentive to choose this year's best, the Alliance will reward completed ballots the chance at two special prize packages: "A Weekend For Two In Times Square" featuring dinner for two at any Times Square restaurant of your choice, two tickets to a Broadway show of your choice and a romantic evening at the W Times Square or "A Family Outing In Times Square" which offers a $300 shopping spree at the Toys "R" Us flagship store, dinner at John's Pizzeria and four tickets to a show at the New Victory Theater.

"We hope that this program will lead people, especially those who care about design, to look at Times Square with fresh eyes," said Times Square Alliance president Tim Tompkins in a released statement. In honor of the Times Square centennial, this inaugural year's designs include both new and old. "Next year," continued Tompkins, "we will focus on excellence in more recent design that is part of the ever-changing landscape of Times Square."

A virtual tour of the Design Times Square selected sites are viewable at www.timessquarenyc.org/design — where viewers can also vote for their three top choices. The three public favorite winners will be announced in the fall of 2004.
