News Brooklyn Academy of Music to Curate Arts Programming at Barclays Center The Atlantic Yards development project has been a point of contention for many living in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood, but a new artistic partnership with the Brooklyn Academy of Music may help soothe tensions.

Plans have been announced for BAM to partner with Barclays Center, the new sports and entertainment venue that will open as part of the Atlantic Yards development project on Sept. 28, 2012. The Barclays Center will be the largest performing arts center in Brooklyn, housing venues with seating capacities ranging from 250-18,000. Barclays will enlist BAM as a consultant to select large-scale theatre, music and dance productions, which will make their New York premieres at the venue. The center will be located roughly within two blocks from BAM's Harvey Theatre and Gilman Opera House.

"We are excited to differentiate the Barclays Center by presenting programming unique to any major sports and entertainment venue in the country," said Barclays Center developer and Forest City Ratner Companies CEO Bruce Ratner in a statement. "I have had a long association with BAM and recognize its extraordinary knowledge of the global arts scene. We are tapping into its resources to identify spectacular and interesting events that are appropriate for a larger venue than BAM’s main theatres. Our alliance furthers our goal to offer the community with a dynamic cultural experience in the heart of Brooklyn."

The Barclays Center will also serve as home for the basketball team the Nets, which will relocate from New Jersey to Brooklyn. More than 150 events are already confirmed for the center, including family programming, concerts, boxing and college sports.
