From 1996 to 2002, Sevy developed and administered the Denver Center's TheatreFest new play program as associate artistic director/new play development while directing many Denver Center productions, including Master Class in 1998, a play he had workshopped prior to its 1995 Broadway debut.
TheatreFest was discontinued when funding was cut in 2001. Sevy became associate artistic director of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, led by Thompson. In Alabama, Sevy directed As You Like It, A Christmas Carol, Titus Andronicus, A Doll’s House, Othello, The Secret Garden, The Real Thing and The Last Night of Ballyhoo.
He also headed the Southern Writers' Project, the ASF's nationally-known new play program, including producing its annual Festival of New Plays.
"Sevy's appointment in Denver is Thompson's first major move to return the Denver Center Theatre Company's new play development program to national prominence and to commission what he hopes will become the next collection of great American plays," according to the announcement.
Sevy is expected to move to Denver before the start of the 2005-06 season in September. *
Sevy has had a long association with the Denver Center Theatre Company, beginning in 1982 under Edward Payson Call and continuing under Peter Hackett and Donovan Marley through 1989. From 1996 to 2002 he was the associate artistic director/new play development. Sevy has directed many productions for DCTC including Master Class, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, The Little Foxes, Molly Sweeney, Amy's View, Valley Song, Dinner With Friends, The Cripple of Inishmaan, Shakespeare and the Old Tradition, A Little Night Music and the premiere of Jeffrey Hatcher's Pierre, among others. He has directed for Arizona Theatre Company, Cleveland Playhouse, Missouri Repertory Theatre, Virginia Stage Company, Northlight Theatre, Coconut Grove Playhouse, Pioneer Theatre Company, A Contemporary Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre and Intiman Theatre in Seattle, the Kimo Theatre in Albuquerque, Utah Shakespearean Festival, Capital Repertory Theatre and the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, among others.
Sevy was the producing artistic director of Tacoma Actors Guild from 1989 to 1996, where he directed numerous projects including Nagle Jackson's The Quick-Change Room, A Comedy of Errors, A Doll's House and Night of the Iguana.
