The Bryant Park Restoration Corporation in New York kicks off its popular outdoor summer film series on June 15 with the Busby Berkeley classic 1933 movie musical 42nd Street.

The film, in which stage novice Ruby Keeler takes over for the lead in a Broadway show at the last minute, was the inspiration of the 1980 David Merrick-produced stage musical of the same name. That show, which ran for 3,486 at the Winter Garden Theatre, was the last creation of director and choreographer Gower Champion, who died the afternoon of Aug. 25, 1980, just before the show's opening night.

Also on the 1998 schedule are Bell, Book and Candle, the 1958 James Stewart feature drawn from John Van Druten's play; Holiday, the 1938 film based on the Philip Barry play; and 1937's cult classic Stage Door, based on George S. Kaufman and Edna's Ferber comedy about aspiring actresses living in a New York boarding house. The latter two films star Katherine Hepburn.

The showings begin at sunset in Bryant Park and are free to the public.
