Times Square has been shut to vehicular traffic for the second time in a year. Strong winds loosened a large billboard on the side of No. 1 Times Square, the tall, thin building bordered by 42nd Street, Broadway and Seventh Avenue. Three people were injured in the March 18, 1 PM accident and taken to Bellevue Hospital. Much of the Times Square has been off-limits since midday as police and fire department forces attempt to secure the dangling sign. As of 4 PM, Times Square was blocked off from 41st to 57th Street, and 42nd Street was blocked from Sixth to Eighth Avenue. 43rd and 44th Streets were also shut down. Later word has pedestrian traffic now allowed on 42nd and 43rd, though still no cars.

No Broadway shows have canceled their March 18 performances, said Kylie Robertson, spokesperson for the League of American Theatres and Producers. Spokespersons for the Roundabout Theatre confirmed that The Lion In Winter and The Mineola Twins are both on for tonight; spokespersons for Ragtime and The Lion King said the same.

Last summer, a construction accident at the Conde Nast tower rising on Broadway between 43rd and 42nd Streets caused several streets to be closed for weeks and threatened the future of the hit musical Cabaret.
