Several lucky artists will have two chances to walk home victorious at the June 2 Tony Awards ceremony.

As many prognosticators expected, Kate Burton won two 2002 Tony nominations: one for her leading turn as Hedda Gabler in the fall revival of the Ibsen classic; one for her supporting performance as Mrs. Kendel in the revival of The Elephant Man.

Choreographer John Carrafa received his first Tony recognition this year, and, as if to make up for lost time, he collected two nominations. Last summer, he restaged the Off-Broadway hit Urinetown at the Henry Miller Theatre. More recently, he made sure fairy tale characters and one cow could skip in the new revival of Into the Woods. He was nominated for his work on both shows, taking up fully fifty percent of the slots in the best choreography contest.

Auteur Mary Zimmerman made a sizable splash with her first Broadway work, the classical myth collage, Metamorphoses. The Chicago talent both wrote and directed the piece, and the Tony nominating committee commended her work with nods in both the best play and best direction of a play categories.

Writer Greg Kotis is another talent who had his Broadway debut this past season. He wrote the book and co-wrote, with Mark Hollman, the lyrics for the musical Urinetown. The show fetchs noms for both best score and best book, giving Kotis two opportunities to win.
