The Classic Stage Company production, Off-Broadway, will begin Jan. 10, 2007, for a limited engagement through Feb. 18. John Turturro will direct the David Ives translation of the ensemble play about the rehearsal of a play.

Caldwell will be in good company: Her respected fellow players include Katherine Borowitz (Illuminata), Linda Emond (Homebody/Kabul), Denis O'Hare (Take Me Out) and Larry Pine (Stuff Happens).

Turturro is the Emmy Award-winning and much-admired stage and film actor and director.

According to CSC notes, "Following in the venerable footsteps of Pirandello, Reza's A Spanish Play goes behind the scenes at the rehearsal of a play, where the line between reality and the theatre begin to blur."

A Spanish Play premiered in Paris at the Theatre de la Madeleine in January 2004. It has also been performed in several other European countries and in Canada. The production will feature scenic design by Riccardo Hernandez, costumes by Donna Zakowska and lighting by Christopher Akerlind.

Legendary Caldwell has appeared in most of the great companies of the English-speaking world. On Broadway, she has won four Tony Awards for roles in Slapstick, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Medea and Master Class. She appeared Off-Broadway in Colette, and in Terrence McNally's A Perfect Ganesh. She played Emma Hamilton in Terence Rattigan's Bequest to the Nation in London; Cleopatra opposite Christopher Plummer's Antony in Stratford, Ontario; Long Day's Journey Into Night opposite Jason Robards at the Kennedy Center and BAM; and Lillian Hellman in Lillian on Broadway and tour. She directed An Almost Perfect Person with Colleen Dewhurst and Richard II in Stratford, Ontario; the award-winning Broadway production of Othello starring James Earl Jones and Christopher Plummer; Park Your Car in Harvard Yard starring Jason Robards and Judith Ivey; and the Off-Broadway production of Vita & Virginia starring Vanessa Redgrave and Eileen Atkins.

French playwright and novelist Reza had an international hit with Art, a sensation on London and on Broadway. Her Life x 3 also played on Broadway and in London. Her new play Le Dieu Du Carnage, directed by Jürgen Gosch, will open on Dec. 8 at the Schauspielhaus in Zurich.
