Rent will open in Toronto in fall 1996 with a Canadian cast but the Broadway director Michael Greif will remain the same, states John Karastamatis, Media Relations, Mirvish Productions, Toronto.

Rent will show in Toronto, at a theatre to be announced, before going on to London. The Toronto production will be the second production world wide.

David Mirvish, producer Mirvish Productions, acquired the Canadian rights to Rent only Friday, April 26, and now will find a Toronto theatre within the next three weeks to run it (for an indefinite run).

Solidly booked are his Royal Alex (Subscription Series) and his Princess of Wales Theatre (Beauty and the Beast). The Elgin Theatre on Yonge Street (where Tommy played) is one theatre which could house the show, but to get it up by late October or November, Mirvish has to decide where very soon.

It is budgeted for about $3 million Canadian, will have a Canadian Cast and directed by Michael Greif. From Toronto, Rent will then go on tour in Canada.
