The readings of new works are presented in non-proscenium environments and are followed by a discussion with the artists and noted guest speakers. The series will play March 27, April 24 and May 29 at the Players Club. Mario Cantone, Jill Clayburgh, Campbell Scott and Jeremy Webb will star in the first offering, The Minotaur, March 27. Erica Gould directs the Ziegler adaptation of the myth of Theseus and Ariadne. Resetting the work in a "timeless present," The Minotaur casts "a different light on the monster in the labyrinth [and] asks if we can rewrite our destinies, or if we are condemned to the fate our cultural stories dictate," as show notes reveal.
Miyagawa's Dividing Ashes will continue the series April 24. The work is billed as an "exploration of personal responsibility, our place in history, and the debts we owe to those who love us. A man falls through the ice in Central Park on the coldest day of winter, taking the woman who tries to save him on an upside-down journey historical and hysterical."
The series concludes May 29 with Merrill's Exposure Time, which poses the question, "Can technology irrevocably alter who we are and how we perceive the world? A hypnotic exploration of the birth of photography and the complex psychological, artistic, and emotional arithmetic that entwined and ensnared together pioneer photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll), and their mutual muse, Alice Liddell."
