Franco Dragone — of Cirque du Soleil fame — will direct the musical, which will be workshopped later this year. Carmen: The Musical features music by John Ewbank and a book by Sarah Miles. The musical, according to production notes, is set "in the dramatic background of war-torn Spain, featuring one of the theatre’s most iconic characters. The raw emotional power of Flamenco is used to tell the story, along with dramatic original contemporary music, shaped with the indelible stamp and vision of one of the most innovative directors of our generation."
Director Dragone was the creative vision behind Cirque du Soleil for the past 15 years, including the productions of Nouvelle Experience, Alegria, Quidam, La Nouba, Mystère and O. He is the recipient of three Obie Awards and the Los Angeles Critics' Award for Outstanding Achievement.
Producers of Carmen: The Musical include Robin de Levita Productions, the Dragone Group and The Firm.
