Bastron's A Contemporary American's Guide to a Successful Marriage (c) 1959, according to press notes, "follows two young couples as they are guided through their marriages in the style of a middle-of-the-century social guidance film. Abby and Mason were high school sweethearts, Danny and Ruth meet in a chemistry study lab... Our narrator leads them through the steps of marriage – from dating, to the wedding and the honeymoon, and advice for how to keep a happy marriage… Eventually their problems continue to get worse, and the narrator’s advice feels unnatural and is only making things worse. At the hospital where they both work – Danny, a medical resident, and Abby, a nurse, happen to meet on a bench and find an unlikely connection with each other. Some time later, their marriages both end in divorce, but Abby and Danny begin to form a new, more genuine connection with each other."
