Mirescu conceived, directs and designs the production — sanctioned by Cassavetes' widow and muse, Academy Award nominated actress Gena Rowlands — for Dangerous Ground Productions. Husbands will run May 19-22 at the SVA Theatre.
Husbands, according to press notes, "describes three middle class men in the throes of a midlife crisis." Cassavetes, Ben Gazzara and Peter Falk starred in the original 1970 film.
"They laugh. They cannot cry. The pain is hidden deep inside. It's intimate. It is in the heart, in the silence of empty hallways when they look at each other and cannot say. Life happens. They fall. They stand back up. They run. They drink. They smoke. The toys are lying around. It is raining outside," Mirescu said of Husbands in a statement.
The cast will feature Jaime Andrews, Audri Augenbraum, Kira Davies, Patrick Flynn, Gayle Greene, Ed Herrera, Roxie Kratt, Anthony LaForgia, Francis Oberle, Florin Penisoara, Pedro Rafael Rodriguez, Rukiye Sahin and Abraham Zalta.
Husbands features music composed and performed by Anders Nilsson, production design by Rebecca Sloane and live camera work by Mark Lechner, Theo Liebermann and Arrien Zinghini. Chris Newman serves as producer and technical supervisor; video consultant is Joe Trammell . Cassavetes, who was a pioneer of independent filmmaking, also inspired Toneelgroep Amsterdam's film and live action production of his 1977 work "Opening Night," which played an acclaimed run at BAM in December 2008.
Mirescu and Chris Newman previously collaborated on the Dangerous Ground Productions live multimedia performance of Bernardo Bertolucci's 1974 film "Last Tango in Paris," which was shut down due to issues with the rights holders of the original film last summer. Mirescu is currently at work on a multimedia homage to Jack Garfein's final film, "Something Wild," and a stage adaptation François Truffaut's "The Woman Next Door."
