Cast Set for American Premiere of Enda Walsh's Penelope at St. Ann's Warehouse

News   Cast Set for American Premiere of Enda Walsh's Penelope at St. Ann's Warehouse
Casting has been announced for the U.S. premiere of Penelope, the latest work from The New Electric Ballroom and The Walworth Farce playwright Enda Walsh. Performances will begin Oct. 23 at St. Ann's Warehouse.

After staging the U.S. premieres of Electric Ballroom and Walworth Farce to acclaim in previous seasons, St. Ann's again collaborates with the Irish theatrical troupe Druid. Mikel Murfi will direct the comedy that will officially open Oct. 26 for a run through Nov. 14.

Based on Homer's "The Odyssey," Penelope earned the 2010 Fringe First Award at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Irish cast will feature Olga Wehrly in the title role, with Niall Buggy as Fitz, Denis Conway as Dunne, Tadhg Murphy as Burns and Karl Shiels as Quinn.

Penelope has designs by set and costume designer Sabine Dargent, lighting designer Paul Keogan and sound designer Gregory Clarke.

According to Druid, "Penelope is based on the final chapter of Homer's 'The Odyssey.' In the production, four ridiculous men meet daily at the bottom of a drained swimming pool and take turns attempting to woo Ulysses' wife. On this particular day, they all sense that Ulysses will return, find them pursuing her, and kill them. In this iteration of Walsh's ongoing exploration of Beckettian existential entrapment, unwinnable love leaves men in speedos staring down the inevitability of death." Phone (718) 254-8779 or visit
