News Casting Set for Sedition World Premiere at Westport Country Playhouse The Westport Country Playhouse will stage the world premiere of David Wiltse's politically charged drama Sedition Aug. 2-18.

Wiltse has based the play on his grandfather's experience as a German professor at the University of Nebraska during the First World War. Wiltse's grandfather was the subject of a state defense council hearing for not taking a "sufficiently virile stance" in favor of president Wilson's war.

According to Wiltse, "Sedition raises questions about a citizen's rights in time of war and the razor-thin line between sedition and free speech. The highly mixed personal motives, base as well as noble, that impelled my grandfather to put himself and his wife in peril in a period of volatile and violent national hysteria are what have prompted me to write this play. The play explores what compels a person to stand against the government in a provocative manner when retribution is swift and devastating. Many may feel opposition, but only a few voice that opposition in a way to bring down the wrath of the government."

The cast for Westport's production of Sedition will include Hannah Cabell, Jeffrey DeMunn, Bryant Martin, Colin McPhillamy, Chris Sarandon and Mark Shanahan. Westport Country Playhouse artistic director Tazewell Thompson will direct.

The production team for Sedition includes set design by Donald Eastman, costume design by Ilona Somogyi, lighting design by Robert Wierzel and sound design by Fabian Obispo.

David Wiltse is a Drama Desk Award winner for his playwriting debut Suggs. His work was also represented on Broadway in Doubles. His plays Triangles for Two and the drama The Good German also had their world premieres at Westport Country Playhouse. Tickets for Sedition are available by calling (203) 227-4177 or by visiting
