Paul O'Dette, director of early music at Eastman, will play the lute and lead Eastman's Collegium Musicum in performances tonight and November 13. The title roles will be sung by two BGSU students, mezzo-soprano Ellen Gartner and tenor Gregory Ashe.
On November 14, the university will host two events connected with the premiere: a lecture by Princeton University's Wendy Heller and a roundtable with O'Dette and other scholars.
A student of Monteverdi, Cavalli wrote 30 or more operas, of which 27 are extant. A number of his works have been revived in recent decades, including L'Egisto , which was given its American premiere by Santa Fe Opera in the 1970s, and La Calisto, performed at Glyndebourne in the '60s.
