Those who have been waiting to offer their versions of songs from A Class Act need wait no longer. Vocal selections from the 2001 Broadway musical were recently released.
Published by Williamson Music (A Rodgers and Hammerstein Company) and exclusively distributed by Hal Leonard, the soft-cover book features 13 songs from the musical about the life of the late Ed Kleban. Song titles include "Light on My Feet," "One More Beautiful Song," "Charm Song," "Paris Through the Window," "Mona," "Under Separate Cover," "Don't Do It Again," "Follow Your Star," "Better," "The Next Best Thing to Love," "Broadway Boogie Woogie," "Say Something Funny" and "Self Portrait." The vocal selections also include a biography of Kleban and a complete list of Kleban's songs.
After a successful run at Off-Broadway's Manhattan Theatre Club, A Class Act opened at Broadway's Ambassador Theatre on March 11, 2001, where it played 105 performances before closing June 10. Directed by and starring Lonny Price as Kleban, the musical — with a book by Price and Linda Kline — received five Tony Award nominations including one for Best Musical. The remainder of the cast featured Randy Graff, Nancy Anderson, Jeff Blumenkrantz, Donna Bullock, David Hibbard , Patrick Quinn and Sara Ramirez.
Best known for his award-winning lyrics for A Chorus Line, Ed Kleban was also a composer whose songs comprised the score for A Class Act. A member of Lehman Engel's BMI Musical Theatre Workshop, Kleban died of cancer in 1987 at age 48.
The vocal selections for A Class Act are now available at Colony Records in New York City and other sheet music outlets throughout the country.
