Seattle, WA's Intiman Theatre is premiering the new Chay Yew play, Red, directed by Lisa Peterson. The play began performances Aug. 28, for an opening Sept. 2 and a run through Sept. 26. Yew is the author of Half Lives and A Language of Their Own, which had a run at the Public Theatre a few seasons back. His new work tells the story of a father and daughter caught up in China's Cultural Revolution. The father is involved in the Beijing Opera, while his offspring decides to join the revolution. When political forces begin to use the opera as a pawn, tragic consequences ensue.
Michi Barall, Jeanne Sakata and Sab Shimono star. Yew is the director of the Asian Theatre Workshop at L.A.'s Mark Taper Forum.
