Syndicated columnist Liz Smith reported (Aug. 7) that Cherry Jones, Alec Baldwin and Laila Robins are being considered for a Broadway revival of Harold Pinter's Old Times, to be produced by Alexander Cohen. Asked about the rumor, Cohen spokesperson David Rothenberg told Playbill On-Line (Aug. 7), "If every idea on a producer's desk went into the papers... Sure, some actually happen, but there's nothing to this. Cherry Jones has said she'd like to do it; Alec Baldwin isn't even interested... Such endless nonsense! Newspapers are more interested in gossip and celebrity than in real news and facts."

Pinter's cryptic comedy/drama concerns a married couple who play host to a female friend -- who may not be what she seems. The original Broadway production starred Robert Shaw, Mary Ure and Rosemary Harris. A public television telecast of the piece featured John Malkovich.
