The Hollywood Foreign Press Association embraced first-time film director Rob Marshall and his adaptation of "Chicago" Dec. 19, as the nominees for the Golden Globe awards were announced.

"Chicago" — which received a leading eight nominations — marks the feature film directorial debut for the director-choreographer and six-time Tony Award nominee Marshall (Damn Yankees, Little Me, She Loves Me, Kiss of the Spider Woman and Cabaret). The movie itself — which opens Dec. 27 in selected markets — has garnered a nomination in the Best Comedy or Musical category. Screenwriter Bill Condon also received a nomination.

The movie's singing and dancing stars Catherine Zeta-Jones and Rene Zellweger were nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for their turns as Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, respectively. Richard Gere was also nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his work as Billy Flynn. Rapper-singer-turned-actress Queen Latifah, who stars as Mama Morton, and John C. Reilly (True West, Marty), who portrays Amos Hart, both garnered Supporting nominations for the film.

Other nominations went to director Stephen Daldry and his film "The Hours" starring Nicole Kidman. British stage director Daldry found success stateside this year with Caryl Churchill's Far Away and is currently working on the musicalization of his award-winning "Billy Elliot" film with Elton John. David Hare (Amy's View, Via Dolorosa) who penned the screenplay adaptation of Michael Cunningham's novel received a nomination as well.

The film version of "Nicholas Nickleby," starring many stage stars including Nathan Lane, Christopher Plummer, Anne Hathaway, Barry Humphries and Alan Cumming is also up for Best Comedy or Musical.

Allison Janney (A View From the Bridge) earned a nomination in the Best Actress in a Television Series for her work on "The West Wing". Edie Falco (Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune) will go up against Janney for her work on HBO's "The Sopranos." The Golden Globes will be awarded on Jan. 19, 2003 during a live telecast on NBC. The ceremony will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
