News Chicago’s Den to Add New 99-Seat Theatre The Bookspan Theatre, the Den Theatre’s newest addition, is set to open in September.

Chicago will get a new 99-seat theatre in September, when The Bookspan Theatre—named after arts educator, performance coach and director Janet Bookspan—opens at 1335 N. Milwaukee, adjacent to The Den Theatre’s other spaces.

According to the Chicago Sun Times, The Bookspan will be an addition to The Den Theatre’s multiplex of stages in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood.

Haven Theatre Company will be the head resident company of The Bookspan, and the first production in the space will be the Idris Goodwin play How We Got On (running September 29-November 12), directed by Jess McLeod.

Other companies expected to produce in the space during the 2016-17 season include Griffin Theatre and Route 66 Theatre Company.

The Den Theatre began as a single stage in 2010; since then, it has expanded to include two spaces on the street level, three theatres on the second floor and two additional spaces used for classes and rehearsals on the third floor.

According to the Chicago Sun, Bookspan worked at Lincoln Center, the Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. She directed productions around the world, including at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Mexico’s Cervantino International Music Festival, The Met’s Opera Guild Finalists Concert, Caramoor Festival, Opera Delaware and Opera Columbus, among others.
