Four Philadelphia area young people’s choirs will meld their voices June 17 in a salute to Wicked, Godspelll, and Pippin composer Stephen Schwartz as a fundraiser to combat “artlessness” in that city’s public schools.
Four Philadelphia area young people’s choirs will meld their voices June 17 in a salute to Wicked, Godspelll, and Pippin composer Stephen Schwartz as a fundraiser to combat “artlessness” in that city’s public schools.
Members of Keystone State Boychoir, Pennsylvania Girlchoir, Garden State Girlchoir, and New Jersey Boychoir have joined forces for An Evening with Stephen Schwartz starting at 7:30 PM in in Philadelphia's Kimmel Center. A total of 360 choral singers ages 8 to 18 are scheduled to perform Schwartz tunes, including “Day by Day” (Godspell), “When You Believe” (Prince of Egypt), and “For Good” (Wicked), accompanied by a four-piece band.
Schwartz himself will be on hand to participate in portions of the performance and to accept the Founders’ Award from the choirs’ parent organization, Commonwealth Youthchoirs.
Special guests The Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus also will be on hand to sing Schwartz’ “Testimony,” composed as part of the It Gets Better Project to discourage gay teen suicide. Schwartz was the recipient of the 2015 Isabelle Stevenson Award from the Tony Awards for his community service work.
Money raised by An Evening with Stephen Schwartz will go to endARTSlessness, a campaign that seeks “to ensure every Philadelphia public school has at least one arts program serving as a lifeline to lift young people up and out of creative poverty.”
