Classic Arts News Cincinnati Symphony Announces 2005-06 Season, But No Tours The Cincinnati Symphony's 2005-06 season will include 14 concerts conducted by music director Paavo J‹rvi, in his fifth season in the post.
The season opens with J‹rvi conducting an all-Beethoven program featuring the May Festival Chorus and including the composer's overture to The Creatures of Prometheus and the Ninth Symphony.

Beethoven symphonies will make two more appearances: Symphony No. 1, conducted by J‹rvi, and Symphony No. 7, conducted by Roger Norrington, who makes his debut with the orchestra.

Soloists next season include mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade in Erich Kunzel's 40th-anniversary concert; Matthias Goerne singing Mahler's Lieder aus Des Knaben Wunderhorn; and appearances from pianists Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Garrick Ohllson, clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, and violinist Christian Tetzlaff.

J‹rvi will also conduct a night of jazz-inspired works, including Weill's Suite from The Threepenny Opera and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, with Wayne Marshall on piano.

New-music premieres will include works by Chen-Yi, Toru Takemitsu, Michael Hersch, Aaron Jay Kernis, John Williams, Thomas Ads, and Erkki-Sven Tuur.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, there are no plans— for the first time in quite a while—for international or national tours for the orchestra, nor is there a Carnegie Hall engagement on the schedule. J‹rvi, however, told the paper that the possibility of European, Asian, and local tours was still being discussed.
