Billie Allen, who originated the role of Sarah in the 1964 premiere of the work, will direct the piece. Suzette Gunn will play Sarah in the new production. Also in the cast is Alice Spivak, Trish McCall, Monica Stith, Danny Camiel, Leopold Lowe and Kellie McCants.
The play is an abstract exploration of the psyche of a young black woman as she struggles with her sense of identity in a world where race is all defining.
Kennedy's work, including Funnyhouse, was the subject of the 1995-96 season at Off-Broadway's Signature Theatre Company. At that time, she had been absent from the theatre for many years.
The Signature is due to stage Kennedy's adaptation of the Flaubert novel "Madame Bovary" in spring 2006.
