Tonight's performance, conducted by music director Franz Welser-M‹st, features soprano Emily Magee, mezzo-soprano Yvonne Naef, tenor Jonas Kaufmann, and bass Franz Joseph Selig, as well as the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus.
Tomorrow at Lucerne, the orchestra gives the world premiere of Chen Yi's Si Ji , a work co-commissioned with the festival and Carnegie Hall through the Roche commissioning program.
The orchestra performs Mahler's Third Symphony at Lucerne on August 27, then travels to Ludwigsburg, Germany, to perform a program of Bart‹k, Schubert, and Ravel on August 28.
Finally, the orchestra makes two appearances at the BBC Proms in London, performing Mahler's Third on August 30 and the Missa solemnis on August 31. (Both performances can be streamed live via the BBC web site.) The concerts mark the orchestra's first Proms appearances since 1994, and its fifth appearance there overall. Last year, the orchestra was scheduled to appear but backed out because of a dispute with the BBC over Internet broadcast rights.
