The new Broadway musical Come From Away, which explores the lives of a group of stranded travelers whose planes are diverted to Newfoundland during the events of 9/11, has added another Canadian engagement to its roster.

The critically acclaimed new musical will play the John Hirsch Mainstage of the Royal MTC (Manitoba Theatre Centre) in Winnipeg January 4–February 3, 2018, with an official opening January 12. The production will then head to Toronto for a sit-down engagement, as previously announced.

In a statement, Royal MTC Artistic Director Steven Schipper said, “For the first time in my 28-year tenure as Artistic Director, we announced our season with a TBA. We can think of few other projects that would have been worth the wait. This uplifting musical may have come from away but we know Friendly Manitobans will be happy to clear it for landing.”

For ticket show times and ticket information, call the Royal MTC Box Office at (204) 942-6537, toll-free at (877) 446-4500, or visit

The new rock musical played an out-of-town Toronto engagement in late 2016 as part of its pre-Broadway rolling premiere.

Come From Away began Broadway previews February 18 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, where it officially opened March 12.

The musical features a book, music, and lyrics by the Canadian husband-and-wife team of Irene Sankoff and David Hein (My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding). Tony Award nominee Christopher Ashley (Memphis) directs.

The Broadway cast features Tony Award nominee Chad Kimball, as well as Petrina Bromley, Geno Carr, Jenn Colella, Joel Hatch, Rodney Hicks, Kendra Kassebaum, Lee MacDougall, Caesar Samayoa, Q. Smith, Astrid Van Wieren, Sharon Wheatley, Josh Breckenridge, Susan Dunstan, Tamika Lawrence, and Tony LePage.

Here's how it's billed: “In a heartbeat, 38 planes and 6,579 passengers were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, doubling the population of one small town on the edge of the world. On September 11, 2001 the world stopped. On September 12, their stories moved us all.”

The creative team includes Ian Eisendrath, music director; Kelly Devine, choreographer; Beowulf Boritt, scenic design; Toni-Leslie James, costume design; Howell Binkley, lighting design; and Gareth Owen, sound design. Music supervision is by Ian Eisendrath, and orchestrations are by August Eriksmoen. Casting is by Telsey + Company.
