Classic Arts News Conductor Alexander Shelley Wins Leeds Competition Alexander Shelley, founder of the chamber orchestra Schumann Camerata, has won the Leeds Conductors Competition.
In the competition's gala final concert on July 9, the 25-year-old Shelley, along with Tecwyn Evans and Michael Young, conducted the Orchestra of Opera North at Leeds' Town Hall. The repertoire for the finals featured Mussogsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, Strauss's Death and Transfiguration, and Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony.

Young received the Audience Award and the Headley/sinfonia ViVA Associate Conductor Prize.

The Leeds Conductors Competition was founded in 1984, and has now been held eight times. It is open to British-born conductors under the age of 35. Previous winners include Sian Edwards, Grant Llewellyn, and Martin Brabbins.
