Classic Arts News Conductor Paul McCreesh to Direct Festival in Poland Paul McCreesh, the celebrated founder of the Gabrieli Consort and Players, has been named artistic director of the Wratislavia Cantans Festival in Wroclaw, Poland.
Founded in 1966, the festival originally focused on oratorios and cantatas. It has since expanded to include chamber music, symphonic concerts, films, lectures, and visual art. The 2006 edition runs September 8-16.

McCreesh replaces Mariusz Smolij, who led the festival from 2002 to 2004.

McCreesh founded the Gabrieli Consort and Players in 1982 while still a student, and rapidly established a reputation as a leading conductor of historically informed performances of Baroque and Renaissance music. More recently, he has led 19th and 20th-century music as a guest conductor with many opera companies and ensembles.
