Intiman artistic director Bartlett Sher (The Light in the Piazza) directs the production which began performances July 23 for a run through Aug. 21 at the Washington stage. David Garrison (Bells Are Ringing, Titanic), Jay Goede (A Year With Frog and Toad), Daniel Eric Gold (Small Tragedy) and Anne Scurria (The Long Christmas Ride Home, Trinity Rep) lead the cast of Seattle actors that include Laurence Ballard, Kristin Flanders, Malte Frid-Nielsen, Jeanne Paulsen and John Procaccino. Barry Cogswell and Andrew J. Peterson also appear.

Singing Forest interweaves the tales of three generations of one family, from New York in 2000 to Vienna in the 1930s and post World War II Paris. The three-act drama was originally commissioned by Seattle’s ACT Theatre (under Gordon Edelstein) and developed with Trinity Repertory Company (under Oskar Eustis, who serves as dramaturg). The world premiere is being produced in association with Long Wharf Theatre, where it is slated to play in January, 2005.

The creative team for Singing Forest features John McDermott (scenic), Elizabeth Caitlin Ward (costume), Stephen Strawbridge (lighting) and Stephen LeGrand (sound). Judith Shahn serves as dialect coach.

Lucas, who won the 2004 OBIE Award for Best American Play for Small Tragedy, has also penned the plays Prelude to a Kiss, Reckless, Stranger, This Thing of Darkness and The Dying Gaul — which he recently adapted and directed for the big screen starring Campbell Scott, Patricia Clarkson and Peter Sarsgaard. Singing Forest will reteam the scribe with director Sher — who worked together on the Adam Guettel musical The Light in the Piazza.
